I have a new engine but the Pierburg carb isn't really working so great, its OK, doesn't stall once its going but idle is fast and its pinging a bit, the mechanic says its needs work as he cant get it to run correctly no matter how he adjusts it. Unfortunately I want to use the van **now** and the rebuild of the carb is going to take 8 weeks.

So I am thinking of fitting a Weber conversion kit to it so I can enjoy the rest of the summer.

Reading the forums it appears that these kits are not the greatest, but its generally appears to be for Aircooled and this is a water cooled.

So my question; Is the weber OK on watercooled engines. I don't want to damage this engine, it being 'new' and all.

Clearly I can then send the pierburg off and get it reconned and then perhaps sell the conversion on ebay once I get it back. I like stuff to be original as possible. VW fitted it for a reason.

I miss my van, so willing to take the hit cost wise, I just did a festival in a tent and body is aching from sleeping on the floor!!

not the answer to the q but there's a pierberg on for sale, nothing to do with me, easiest swap and then recon the original cheaper than the weber which personally I'm not a fan of as it takes a lot of faffing to fit ime and it's a compromise at best

My caravelle was running a weber when i got it.
Didn't seem too bad to be honest though i swapped back to the pierburg when i LPG'd it and sold the weber on.

I think the weber kit is about £400 isn't it?
As Aidan says, find a rebuilt pierburg if you can and leave the weber to the golf/scirroco boys.

I have a pierburg and I can get it fixed up, but the summer is here and its 8 weeks to get it fixed by which time the summer will be gone. Had a good search around, apart from the one listed on here Its hens teeth, the weber I can get right now.

I can fit the weber, use that till the pierburg is fixed and then sell the weber for what ever I can get. Costly but at least I can use the van.

Its not a perfect solution but its 'OK' as a stop gap is good enough for me.

Be warned lots of technical questions have been posted about the Just Krappers Weber conversions .... not a single positive comment yet. Why not buy a known good Pierburg and sell that on again once your's is reconditioned ? Like for like styleeee.

Roger Ball is the man for getting carbs rebushed (only bit that wears out to be honest). He does mail order - tis in the WIKI. Does bays and Beetle carbs too.

Because I cannot find a pierburg 2e3 that is 100% and I have spent ages looking. The one listed on here has a broken pull down choke.

I want to use the van in 9 days time.

I am very very fed up with sleeping in a tent as the 2nd festival this year I've had to do it has just come and gone. If the weber can last 10 weeks at OK performance I will be happy. I'll not need the van much then and I can wait for the recon pierburg.

I fitted a weber 3 years ago bought from southern carburettors been very happy with it and now running lpg through it

Good, well from what I've been reading it can be made to work OK, which will do me just fine. I can live with imperfect and I live in hope it will get me past the summer and I can get to the business of enjoying it rather than stressing about tents and getting to festivals.

Don't know what you miss till its gone.

I think there is a lot more that can go wrong with a carb than that.

The wiki has a choke heating coil issue.

Anyway it should have arrived at the mechanics yesterday, perhaps today. So will post up how I feel about it when I finally get my van back. It's in because the oil pressure buzzer came on and its a new engine. He's doing a pressure test and possible wiring check of the buzzer.

Will post up how I get on with the new carb.
