CV started Knocking - is it OK to drive 250 miles?!

Hi,

OK stupid question probably - but have Type 25, on holidays now and CV joint has just started knocking , getting increasingly loud.

Have about 250 miles to home. Is it ok to limp on, and just ignore the clonking ? or will there be catastrophic damage if it suddenly goes?

i.e does anyone have experience of nursing a CV joint to get them home, and if so how long/far did they drive it?

Many thanks,

Al.

I would check that all the bolts are tight first - usually the wheel end ones where people have difficulty accessing to tighten up properly. They are the ones that came loose on mine. I managed about 800 yards on mine - I wouldn't try 250 miles.

If the bolts are good, others have reported that getting underneath and wobbling the shaft a bit to move the grease round has shut it up for a while...

do a search on here.

Wouldn't hurt to get some grease & pack into the CV joint, take it steady on the drive home too. :ok

many Thanks for tips. The bolts are ok. i'll try wiggling the drive shaft, packing in some extra grease and take the risk!

By the time you've done that you could have fitted a new one, it takes minutes.

if you pull the shaft out of the joint as far as it will go and then squeeze the rubber boot to push the grease back in ( a bit like milking a cow ) you will probably get away with travelling home without having to dismantle and regrease this has worked for me before and got me home from Le Mans. Good luck

Sorry didn't see the 'On holiday' part ... yes pump the rod back and forward and it should get you home ok.

A get you home temporary fix is to make small hole in gaiter and with a grease gun, pump even high-melting point grease in there to shut it up. The black stuff is better but if you're in the sticks, it may be your ticket home. Nothing guaranteed ofcourse but it got me home on at least one occasion....

I wouldn't ignore it - sure to go over 250 miles unless you at least grease it heavy although the clonk will always be noticeable under load. Slow acceleration - basically to keep the clonking to a minimum. If it does go, you'll lose all drive.
