Hi all.

Going to start building a homebrew camper in the next couple of weeks. I have a 2 way 12v / gas fridge to go in (kindly donated by Withcotejohn - Thanks John. )

So my question is this. Is the vent there just for the gas side of the fridge. I'm not installing any gas in this camper so will be using the fridge purely on 12v. Does it still need to be vented to the outside?

no

theres usually a flu vent and an airiation(sp) vent.youll only need to make sure it doesnt get too hot at the back if its just on 12v..but 12v will suck ya battery flat pretty quick mate if the engines not running

Yeah I know but I'm gonna fit it with a good couple of leisure batteries which should at least keep stuff cool for a weekend, and run a split charger to charge them wilst running so should stay topped up when touring.

I'm gonna get a petrol stove too so no having to mess about with gas bottles.

aye..then if nothings being burnt then theres no toxic gasses coming from it..so your safe without a flu vent

The fridge will not be able to cool very efficiently without the vents (the air will not circulate) the very least you would need would be a fan to force air over the pipework.

I'm planning on fitting the fridge into a cupboard by the sliding door, but there will be vents in the cupboard so it won't be completely sealed in. I'm hoping that will be sifficient.

If you can borrow a copy of the "Haynes Motorcaravan Manual" there's 4 or 5 pages about installing a fridge.

if its the fridge i think it is then it has air circulation(cant spell airiation..i think ) from the front lower panel..all you need then is another vent for the air coming out the top or the side of the cupboard then naturally hot air rises and goes out the top vent and draws cool air in the bottom

There's plenty of campers that vent the exhaust outside but fit the frifge so there is a gap underneath at at the top of the front so the air circulates behind the fridge to cool the heat exchangers. Only downside is it might get a bit hot in the camper in high summertime with doors shut etc.

If you are not using gas then the best batteries would be Traction battery weighs less and takes up less room
