Which Engine have I got?

Hi

I am a newbie so hope this is in the right place. Bought an 89 Caravelle last week which owner said had been previously fitted with a Mk 3 golf 1.9 diesel engine. When I got the V5 through the Engine code started with DJ which when I searched for bits says it is a 2.1 diesel.

I have had a hunt for a stamped number on block but all i have found is 028103 373j stamped on the block. Does this sound right? If not where do I have to look to find the code?

if its from a golf diesel then chances are its a 1.9 N/A 1y or an 1.9 TD AAZ(the givaway here is it will have a turbo on the exhaust)...see if there is a sticker on the top of the cam belt cover and if its there it should tell you what the engine is
also get under the nearside of the engine bay and look to the middle of the block and it should say 1.9D or 1.9d/td
the right place for the engine code on the block is just under injector 3 on a flat surface...it might be hard to read though

if you post a pic it will be better

Managed to have a poke around today. Lying under the van the block seems incredibly rusty and it was really hard to make out any of the stampings. I took photos although they are a bit rubbish!

Cool cheers. Should the block be that rusty? I could peel flakes off of it by hand!

oh..and one very important thing is ..dont go off what that dipstick says.first opportunity give it a service and empty the oil when its warm.then fit a new oil filter and fill up with 4.5 litres of oil .then you will have the correct ammount in ,check on the dipstick what the reading is and put a mark on it for future oil checks.
