starting issues plus a few others..

Just after a few opions,
My van has a problem starting. Used to be only now and again but seems to be more or less everytime now. what happens is, basically nothing. turn the key, can't hear anything happen. I'll then put it in gear, handbrake off, get out and rock it back and forward. jump back in, out of gear turn the key and starts up fine. looks funny but it works every time. Why is this?
iv got the starter off at the moment as im in the middle of renewing the clutch and a leaky intermediate gasket on the box. So im guessing it will be worth taking it apart and greasing everything up and what have you just as its off.
Another problem i was having is that my clutch pedal seemed (i say seemed because maybe it'l be sorted after iv replaced and bled the clutch) had about and inch or two of "floppyness". where there was no resistance at all when pressing it down for these two inches also loosing fluid somewhere. Iv just done all the brakes with new cylinders and pads so no leaks there. master cylinder looks dry. no fluid around drivers floor. slave cylinder looks kinda wet but not as wet as how other people have described in other posts with leaky slaves. little confused.
As i say this may be resolved after i fit new clutch and slave and bleed through. but i did try bleeding it a few months back to no avail. Air in the master cylinder? no idea.
What do you think? any advice or knowledge appreciated
Cheers
