another starter motor problem

the starter doesn't spin, tried the tests and it needs to come off so I can either replace the whole unit or just the bushes. The top 'nut' holding the starter motor on isn't a usual nut, its almost like a bolt but the head of it is about 3/4 of a circle with a short flat side.

Does anybody know if this is a special type of nut/bolt and if there is a particular tool to undo it with? Sockets wont fit and open end of spanner only gets one side of grip on it.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, I now have very sore nuckles and head and my neighbours have discovered some new swear words!

It's a long bolt (about 3 ins)with the nut on the engine side.I kept turning the head untill i realised.

Hi - goto the wiki - there are a couple of features/articles on changing starter motor.

That bolt caught us out, too....

thanks very much! Took me 20 mins to get in off compared with 3 hours of knuckle grazing the day before.
