That's a BIG question, and IMHO it depends a bit on personal preferences. The first choice to make is between steel tubular frame or grp hoop poles (dome or tunnel tents) I have seen many versions of each. If it's durability you want, the frame tent type is
probably best, but is heavier to carry around. I am sure many owners of nylon covered tunnel tents can refute this generalisation about durability.
My van came with a brand new frame tent, so the choice was made for me. I bought an inner tent with integral ground sheet which gets suspended from the frame, and still leaves half the tent space. I have to say I quite like having clear plastic window panels, but I think you can get these in some dome and tunnel types.
In all tents, perhaps one of the most important features is the flap which attaches to the van, and how efficient it is at keeping wind and rain out, and how easy it is to attach to the van.
Like most ordinary tents, the manufacturers update their drive away awnings pretty well on an anual basis. I look forward to reading what others have to say on this topic.
Good luck!
