There's a festival in Germany I want to go to next year.

It's north of Berlin, and I'm trying to work out if there's an even vaguely affordable way of doing it - from London.

By far the cheapest would be to fly. But I hate air travel and it'll mean being very tight with gear.

The sleeper from Paris would be about £400 for me in my own compartment, Inc. The Eurostar portion. Cosy and relaxing. But living in a tent for the festival.

Ideally though I'd like to take the van. Driving all the way it's about 1500 miles round trip. That's a hefty fuel bill and will take at least 2 days either side of endless driving boring roads.

Any ideas on ferries? All I can find is Harwich-Esbjerg. The prices are even more eye watering than fuel to go all the way.

You can do Berlin in a day easy, even easier if you go the Hull - Rotterdam route.
It costs a bit more but well worth it as you land on the Continent at 0900 fresh for the 8 hour blast across the Fatherland.

The direct flights with sleazyjet are reasonably priced if you book early enough.

Did more investigation.

All in prices, ferry and fuel... Dover Calais is the cheapest, at about £500. The Hull route (remember I'm in London) looks to work out at around £600ish. Harwich-Esbjerg about £700ish with a cabin (if I can get the same sort of fare next year). I'd be tempted to splash the cash and do the latter, maybe see a bit of Norway too on the way back.

The joys of 2.0l Aircooled. Possible trips like this make me think about LPG again.

Take a look at Norfolk DFDS line Dover Dunkirk, they usually give a good price and offer good service.
