Leaking Gearbox

I think this one is for Aiden, me thinks.... My 16" gearbox has got a fare leak. cant really determine where the leak has originated from except that it is generally at the front (near where the prop attaches) and is leaking 'clean' gear oil.
I have posted before with the complaint of vibration when I do about 30mph plus. tracking has been ruled out etc.

My question is....are 16" gear boxes different to 14" (I assume they are as my two syncros drive totally different).
If so is it poss to get this one reconditioned or is it a new box? I know its difficult without seeing it...

Are there options for replacing it with, i.e 4 or 5 speed box?

I think this is the cause of the vibration as the apperance of the oil and the start of the vibration did seem to start at the same time. The prop looks good with no obvious movement.

Hope you can help...

Many thanks

LLoyd box is same as any other apart from the output flanges, yes it can be fixed, currently booked up until September, sounds like front output bearing and seal, if you want to remove front output section and check I can send you a stop gap unit keep you mobile unless it's something else ,more serious. Check the reverse idler cover plate - exposed esp on diesel

Thanks Aiden,
Can the gearbox (at least the front part) be removed from the van without removing the engine? Or can I assume that it can be done without removing the box?

many thanks for your help.
Good to hear that you are busy!!

Thanks again

Paul :ok

Have just had a look at the front box / prop and there is slight movement in the prop at the universal joint. Compared to my 14" which had zero play. Would the play in the prop contributed to the where of the seal / bearing in the front box?
i feel as though i am getting closer to the answer???!!! :?

Paul
yes front bit can be removed in situ pretty much .same job as fitting a decoupler see Neil's old thread etc for details
yes wear in UJ could contribute to wear in bearing, it's just a single row annular ball bearing so not great with off axis loads, maybe able to repair it yourself just swap bearing for new and fit new seal, no special tools really just oil seal and big circlip to remove, I can supply parts no problem
