Hi

I'm a new owner and am a complete novice on the mechanical side - please be gentle with me!

I've recently discovered that my bus (a 1985 1.9 petrol) probably has the age old rotten fuel tank problem - petrol smell, and fuel over forecourt floor when I tried to fill her up!

So, realising I need a new fuel tank and lacking the tools and knowledge to do it myself, I intend to go to a garage to get the work done.

What I'm after is advice as to what other work it would be a good idea to get done whilst she's there with the fuel tank out - am thinking obviously replacement of the fuel lines and filters, clean up of the carb (btw not sure if there's 1 or 2 carbs?? - it's a DG engine), replacement of handbrake cable. Is there anything else?

Have tried the search and the wiki and can't find what I'm looking for!

Check the integrity of the copper hydraulic brake and clutch pipes above the tank.

Best to have the front handbrake cable inspected and greased, front>back clutch pipe likewise. Waxoyle the cab floor above the tank.

1.9DG should have a single Pierburg 2E3 carb with a single inline fuel filter straight after the tank on the offside. A thorough service ... plugs, leads,cap,rotor arm, air filter, oil (specify 15w/40 MINERAL and never put semi-synthetic in) and filter (Mann W719/12) Change gearbox oil (GL4 grade 80/90) and lubricate the gearbox linkage front to back.

redo all the breathers, even if they arent rotten now you may as well do them with the tank out.

if youve removed the filler neck check all the rubber behind the cap, its a fave place to let water in

I bought a second hand tank thinking i needed to replace it becuase i could also smell fuel and leaked fuel when i went over half. Turns out i just needed one of these for 4 quid....

Thanks very much for that I will check before I buy a new tank just in case!
