Noisy Diff I think!!

I have a noisy Diff I think.........When I press the accelerator ( most noticeable in 4th and 5th gears) I get a sort of whirring sound, as soon as I lift my foot (as in coasting but in gear) the sound goes away. So only when "drive" is being applied I think.

No noises at idle and the clutch seems OK. I have changed the Gearbox oil and this has made no difference.

:?: What do you guys think, is it likely to be a noisy Diff and if so would I need to take the gearbox off to get it sorted?

Quick mention of vehicle specefics...

1.6 (na/cs) diesel 1983 with a 5 speed gearbox

Thanks

Nev

If they've done a few miles, it's worth checking the CV joints first, to see if the noise goes away. Even the slightest play in the CVs will producew all kinds of noise.

I listened even more carefully today and there is very little or no noise in first or second. I am thinking it may well be the diff....... :(

I was thinking of adding some of the "Slick 50" stuff for gearboxes !

Any other suggestions for a temporary fix to help quieten things down, I am presuming it would be a gearbox out job to replace the diff

As all gears use the differential you would expect the 'diff' to be noisey in all gears. This sounds like support bearings to me..but hey, I'm no expert.
Aidan is your man on this forum as someone who knows exactly what fails and the kind of symptoms that these failing parts create.

I hope Aidan will read this and offer some advice, His workshop isn't too far from me so I feel a trip coming on in the new year if it lasts that long.

My main concern is that our annual run to Cornwall is in a few weeks and although the camper has always had this noise I find I am listening to it all the time now expecting the worst!! Hence the thought of using the gearbox Slick 50 stuff to possibly act as a little bit of an insurance against a big breakdown on the M6......

The sound reminds me of when I used to ride on the local bus (public transport) not a hum but more of a mechanical whirring!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I had a chat with my works mechanic today and he seemed to think it could be a Differential problem too.
