Gearbox Oil Leak.

Hi

You may have seen my old clutch thread. I've removed the box and find clutch slip is due to oil contamination from gearbox input shaft seal. My question is how much play/wobble should there be in the mainshaft? Mine appears to have about 5mm when measured at the tip of the shaft. This equates to about 2mm at the seal and I'm wondering if its the cause of the seal failure

Thanks again for your help everyone Andy.

When it's supported by the spigot bearing there will be no movement, that's what it's there for. Sounds like a simple replace seal job and lubricate spigot bearing

when you remove the old seal look behind it and make sure that the oil splash guard (I have forgot the correct name for some reason) isnt moving, as if it has become dislodged from the bellhousing it will cause you the same problem again.

some times they can be bonded back into place and sometimes its a new belhousing.
good luck

cheers

oil thrower :ok

remove the bellhousing to change the seal it's easier and check this at the same time
wobble at the tip is normal when out, it's supported by the spigot bearing when installed, fit anew spigot bearing while you are there save having to go in for the next 60k miles if fitting new clutch and change the gearbox oil while yoyu are at it

Gearbox oil would have been nice! there was only about 500ml in there. suprisingly the box seams fine no noises and just a bit stiff into 1st when hot. I guess I was lucky to tackle the clutch when I did. :ok
