hi were heading down to the soutrh of france 11 july for a month,weve always wild-camped but looking for something different this year so wonder if anyone has any suggestions.i just phoned a site near agde,sposed to be run down and just a basic site and they want 45e per nite for the cheapest pitch for two adults!!!! almost had a breakdown,its half that price at nice! anyways any suggs greatly appreciated. thanks leroi

That's about the prices we saw last year. We stayed on an orchard just off the ferris wheel roundabout between St.Tropez and Cavalaire s. M. and that was €20 per night. In the St.Trop area all the campsites have a cartell and work through an agency. There are some aires ... one in Sete (near Agde) and a more along the coast heading towards Narbonne but be very careful as the coastal ones seem to have a history of being targeted by thieves, try a few miles inland. There are also a few France Passion sites around the area (mostly honey from memory) but avoid the one in the hills behind St.Trop ... looked beautiful till it went dark then full of mosquitos and snakes.

This is the book to buy

The Southern part of France is a huge area. I have never booked in advance even in the middly of July/August. That means that you don't always get into the first choice site. I suggest getting a Michelin camping book and check out the prices. Also there will be a good many campsites that are not listed but are fine. Often if you look slightly inland from the coast etc the prices drop quite drmatically. Search out local authority 'camping municipale' sites. They tend to be much cheaper and are usually well kitted out.

ha ha good one dude!!! i do know what you mean tho,we have stayed on some before and some were very nice,even a bit pricey considering the one site had a beautiful back-drop of what can only be described as battersea power station!!,anyway guys thanks loads for the info and links. cheers

Great Campsite at the viaduct in Antheor, between st Rapheal and Cannes on the coast, Ive been going there for years and the prices have always been reasonable

You have obviously had bad experiences. I have never had that experience in over 26 years of camping in France. My advice is check out the campsite including toilets showers etc before you pay. That is what French people do. If you are not happy just drive away. There are plenty more campsites to choose from in the South. Easy. Happy camping.

Also have a look for a municipal site in the area, they are sort of council run sites and are basic but cheap

There's a beautiful campsite at a place called Vias, near Cap d'Agde.

Three pools, bar/ restaurant, shop, best toilets and showers ever, gym in the shower block. 150M to great beach. 16 euros/night for campervan and two people. There are quite a few more cheap sites in the area but the one I mention is the best I have found.

All the 'camping municipale' sites I have stayed on have been really good. Probably used about 10 so far with no problems

Agreed. The french are set up for campers on a budget. Good quality and I love the fact that most muni's are walking distance to a town.

Totally agree. The municipal sites are always in convenient locations. I've used them for years. This year we paid from 7 to 11 euro per night . Great value and all the sites are basic but functional and clean.
