I've done a 1000 trouble free miles in my 1.9DG Caravelle until yesterday. The nosie from the hydraulic Liters settled down after a while since Ive owned it. However yesterday the noise got worse and did not settle down to the point were i slowed right down for fear of doing some serious damage. I've googled it and ever one seems to say change the oil and filter. Should I get it looked at professionally or go with the oil and filter change and see were that gets me first. Even if it's just for fresh oil to get me to a professional to whip the rocker covers of and take a look... O yer apparently the oil was changed when I bought it...

Yes it was 1/2 way between the 2 marks

Change the oil (15/40 MINERAL) and a Mann filter, if it still does it check the tappet settings .... current wisdom is contact plus 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn for each cylinder in turn at DTC.

Cheers Ian. Will change the oil and filter should I flush it first?

If the oil looks pretty clean there will be nothing to be gained by a flush.
As you don't know what oil was used in the last change, it could be the viscosity used was too low (the oil is too thin) so an oil change with a good 15W40 mineral would be a good idea and likely cure your problem if the thinner oil is in there at the moment.

I've just had a route through the box of spares I got with the bus and found the oil. It's Halfords 15w 40 part synthetic for cars built in the 80's-90's with fuel injection.

Ok so I changed the oil to 15w40 mineral. Changed the oil filter to a mann filter and replaced spark plugs. Engine on ran it for 5 mins, still the same taping noise. Decided to take it round the block. Driving it made the noise worse again with another knock from the engine ever few seconds, and loss of power too.

Do you have Buzzer of Doom ... your van at '88 should have the circuitry ? Someone hasn't earthed the sensors out ? Does the oil light come on when you turn on the ignition and go out as the engine turns over ?

Buzzer goes of when I've been driving at 65mph then slow down to 40mph. The oil light is on when ignition turns on and goes of when engine is running

The engine has oil pressure issues ... could be the pump worn out but may also be bottom end wear.

I notice you never mentioned the B.o.D. before ?

Regarding the B.O.D I googled it and came to the conclusion it was a faulty switch and have not got round to changing it or looking at it. I did speak to the owner on the way back after I bought the bus as it went of. His son said it's the wrong oil pressure switch.

Does it come on as you exceed 2,000rpm ?
