Diesel replacement dilema

It's been awhile since I've been on here but I require a bit of advice again.

I've a 1990 Wedge, formaly a 1.7D (so has that gearbox) now has a 1.9D 1Y in it.
The motor is extremely noisy and I mean very!
Also very long in the tooth and leaking oil copiously.
My question is; should I replace with another 1Y or a 1.6TD?
I understand they have similar power and I can get my hands on both.
From other 1.6TD cars I've had, I remember the engine was quieter also?
Would the 1.6TD be ok with that gearbox?

One last thing, is it possible to upgrade a 1.9 1Y by adding the Turbo and associated bits from a 1.6 TD (JX)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

you'd have to check whether whatever 1y or AEF engine you got had piston cooling oil squirters - some did and some didn't AFAIK- if not then a turbo's not an option.

I'm gonna keep it simples.
I've got me hands on a 72k miler 1Y, that should keep me going for a few years.

This 1Y was in it when I got her so I know very little.
I think the airbox is from the Caddy donor??

ok straight away..the reason its noisey is because its missing some of the intake pipework.it runs up the side of the van to the vent as a snorkel..theres also another box at the bottom of the vent that connects to the airbox that holds the filter.
when i did m 1y it was noisey too and when i connected it all back up again it made a huge amount of difference :ok
and at some point(although it looks dry now)oil has been coming out of one or more of the 3 bolts that hold down the rocker cover..im thinking your oil leak must be underneath if its not that..check around the sump gasket first

and how do you mean..long in the tooth ?

Thanks a mill, that makes perfect sense!
I never thought of intake noise!!
The motor is over 150k at this stage.
There is a bad oil leak underneath and the clutch is slipping very badly so I fear the crankshaft seal has gone.
Is there a way of working out what intake parts I should get??

stick your head under behind where the rear left light goes and see if you have the box thats connected to some ducting thats has a snorkel on the end..if you cant see owt take the near side cover off the vent and see if the snorkel is still there...somewhere on here there is a post with all the parts in a pic..ill see if i can find it for you

just noticed too from your pic that the cold start cable is disconnected from the pump..you might wanna check that the coldstart is not engaged if its a manual one :ok

also as an after thought....does the engine to bellhousing have that dirt plate fitted in? if not then oil from the sump could get into the bellhousing...so might not be as bad as you think

is the leaking oil engine or gear oil - common problem when fitting 1.9 engine is to forget to fit a spigot bearing in the crankshaft, which is required in our van to support the input shaft, result is usually about 350 miles later a slipping clutch as the gearbox input oil seal is shagged as is the oil thrower behind it and gear oil is leaking into the bellhousing and contaminating the clutch, you'll find out when you get in there to change the clutch which side is leaking
