Thermostat threaded inserts

I've got three out of four of the thermostat bolts out but the threaded insert on the last one is spinning. Has anyone got any tips about how to get this out? Ideally, I don't want to remove the housing because it's held on by two rusty-looking allen bolts with poor heads which look like they'll be a real pain to get out. Thanks in advance.

Oh, it's the later plastic housing on a 1.9 DG.

well if you are going to try and reuse the housing then cut off the head and then once cap is off drift out stump and captive and hope there's enough material left that bolt washers and nut will work
or just get a new housing

Don't want to be the bringer of doom but I've just done the same thing this weekend.
I had exactly the same problem and I ended up having to cut the head off the bolt as aiden said.
Then I replaced the bottom half of the housing with the shiney new
Brickwerks one, i couldn't get the bolts out of that either so I managed the top one
With some big molegrips and hacksawed the head of the bottom one with a junior hacksaw.
2.5hrs later it was done yipeee :) .
If you do this remember to buy some new 8mm bolts first.

Cheers chaps. Well, I've hacksawed the heads off and got the top half of the housing off (that was fun). Just tested the stat and it's working fine - grrrr. So now I've got to get the two studs out the bottom half or get a new one. Oh well, at least I can rule the stat out and change the temp sensor, coolant and pipe to from the stat while I'm at it.

Another question - I've got a new coolant temp sensor to go in but there are two sensors in the housing. Haynes says the rear one (pointing towards the front of the van) is the temp gauge sensor (it has yellow and brown wires on mine) and the one to the side is the sensor for fuel injection but mine's a 1.9 carbed DG (the wires on this are purple and black I think). So, what's the sensor on the side for? Or have I just got a fuel-injected stat housing and sensor?

coolant temp sensor for the inlet manifold heater - thick red wire going to underneath the carb
