Hi All,

New to the site and to T25's to please be gentle!!!

Sorry if this is duplicate post, I looked around the site but could not find what I needed......


I am lookin for a new project and want to get a T25 (if you know of one in the cheshire area let me know). Can someone please advise on engine types?

I am an intermediate DIY mechanic and want to know which engine to look out for (not got the van yet!).

I've been advised the 1.6 engines are underpowered and that the air cooled have complex / expensive ducting systems but I thought I'd come ask the experts (hope the flattery works)!!

Are there different "sub types" of engines? What is a WBX I keep hearing about?

Are there better years of engines?

Are they all considered "crap" and I should be looking to put an alternative such as the golf TDI?

What about gearbox? Are there 5 speed versions?

Does the 1.9 easily convert to LPG.

Just been to look at an 82 1.6 Air cooled and that is a simple looking engine. I was looking for the crank handle and the candle ignition system!

They tell me it suffers from a compression issue. Is there this a common fault? Are there any other "common faults" with the VW engines?

you really need to use search! there are hundreds and hundreds of common faults with engines! I went to collage for over a year to learn to be a mechanic and that was just an intro you want my notes

loss of compression, is it on one cylinder or all, could be a multitude of things, when looking at vans get the one with the best body work, bugger the engine they can be fixed replaced alot cheaper than panels , tho dont get one that has just been re sprayed, unless it comes with before during and after pics!

Faults?
Not faults ...VW didn't make faulty engines
they are all very old and high mileage engines, probably higher than any other 80's van.
wear is inevitable and it then depends on how the previous owners looked after it.
look at a VW flat four as you would at any other high mileage motor, look for smoke and leaks... simple

.... I'm hoping for a nice project to while a way a lazy sunday. I've currently got a converted ex forestry commission ford transit and have been spending a bit of time tinkering, replacing water pump etc. Its a great van but I don't want to tinker too much incase I take it off line for too long! I guess I'm after some advise from those that have been through it before to ensure I dont pick up a dog that will drain my cash and enthusiasm!

Just trying to find out as much as possible so I dont end up with a new, rather large garden ornament!

Has anyone seen that if you type f_o_r_d t_r_a_n_s_i_t without the _ it is transformed to ford transit. Guess the creator is not a fan!
