Re attaching 4wd drive staff

I have had my syncro for about 5 weeks and when I brought it I was given hundreds of spares which is good. One of them was the drive chain or what you call it for the 4wd.
I spoke to someone who said it would help with fuel consuption and most diffenetly control.
Question, is it a case of finding the right bolts and then re attaching to the right place and also the original engine isn't there anymore I have a 1.9TD.
Or is life a lot more complex???

Is it just the prop shaft thats not attatched?
Fuel consumption will only be a tiny dfference, though i noticed a difference in miles per tank with and without prop in palce, i did tend to slide it alot with out though

and generally drive like a prat, it won't slide with it in place

I assume we are talking prop shaft?
Will not make a hoot of difference to your fuel consumption but will reinstate all the advantages of syncro 4wd.
That is provided your viscous coupling is functioning?
Have to ask the question 'why was the prop shaft taken out?'
Cant answer re: the bolts at the moment but with prop shafts they are normally featuring a specific thread and a method of locking, you dont want the prop dropping off on your travels!
Someone with an encyclopedic memory for detail is sure to be along shortly and fill you i on the bits I'd have to look up. Its old age

drive chain
possibly drive train? this is the whole system from front to back part of which is the prop shaft. This is sometimes removed mistakenly to improve fuel economy arguably this has very little effect. The other reason it is removed is because part of the 4 wheel drive system is shagged like the viscous coupling is too tight and causing problems else where.

You may want to consider why the prop was removed in the first place, it may have been removed because of a knackered VC. Alternatively, the ujs on the prop itself may be worn out.
Have a read of the technical info, for iinfo about VCs etc
here
Doesn't seem to improve fuel consumption by any noticeable amount, but as Kev says, it will greatly improve handling.
Cheers,
Sam.

The correct size is M8 X 25, thread pitch 1.0 (fine), Strength grade 8.8 minimum, 12.9 is good. The correct nut is a prevailing torque all metal locknut matching grade or sometimes called property class. No washers are used.
Don't use 'agricultural' /domestic quality nuts/bolts...
From VW these are expensive (about £1 per screw), but at least you have the right thing:
VW
Screw N 010 102 3 (M8x1x25) 8 off
Nut N 022 152 1 (M8x1-STOVER) 8 off
But I'd check first they aren't in the glovebox or knockinga round in the van somewhere.
And check the UJ's on the prop as others have said above...

It could just be there were unevenly-worn tyres on the van and it handled 'funny'..... there's normally something shot though, mostly likely a front outer CV.

get that prop put back in - you know you want to...
only problem is what you're gonna find when you do!
it's good to have a properly functioning syncro though - worth it in the long run.
