Hi can anyone give me some advice please. When i put my foot on the brakes the brake lights don't come on unless i press the peddal at least half way down this means that i have no brake lights if i brake gently which is not a good thing . Any ideas as to why this is happining would be greatly appreciated.The van in question is an 87 turbo diesel.

Break light switch is on the master cylinder, these can fail in the way you describe.
