Hi guys, ive got a 1982 vw transporter that just dosnt seem to be going right at the moment.
sometimes it runs like a dream with no problems at all. Other times its very very difficult to get it to start.
the main problem im having at the moment is when i went to start it a couple of days ago it just blew the Servo pipe out, and as a result wont start again after i put it back in.
any help would be greatly appreciated
cheers josh

Welcome to the forum
Perhaps you may like to tell us what kind of engine you have ? Petrol or diesel would help for a start.
Ian

Yep, that's why you're having trouble ... the 1915 is a watercooled engine.

When you find out what engine it is.... tell us what you have done to it to try to solve the problem.

Hi Josh,
one step at a time mate! Welcome to the nut house....go over to general chat and introduce yourself.
Guessing you have the 2.0 ltr Aircooled? One rad at the front, no water eh

Although it says 1950 (or sommat like that, I haven't had one in years!)on the log book, its referred to as the 2.0. Twin carbs on top?
Can't help with the mechanicals....but there are plently of people who can....but the better the explanation and anything you have done to try and cure it is always useful info for those in the know.
all the vaccuum lines on and correct - without them the timing is likely to be poo so won't start. Never heard or read about it blowing the servo hose off. very strange!
Go do a double check....a picture if poss...and the guru's will do what they can to help, I'm sure.
Em

I guess a backfire in the inlet manifold might blow a servo hose off ?
Possibly caused by the inlet valve not closing properly (or occasionally sticking as Josh's problem seems intermittent) ?
A compression test might be a good idea.

Right ive got the servo problem sorted, just replaced the rubber joints and it seems ok now.
The van runs now but not very well. Its developed backfire now and after a little while it stops fireing on all cyclinders amd then just cuts out.
Scared alot of people when i was driving it around but it wasnt the desired effect

That's sounds like a number of things
More air leaks
timing
mixture
you need to help us out with a better description ...if you want more specific help
we're not there so you have to describe it

Here is a picture of my engine, the problem i have is the van will start and it will run.
Every now and again it will back fire, and after a few times the engine will just cut out. It will start again straight away though.
it is also getting very hot between cyclinders 3 and 4 (left hand side).

As has been mentioned before. It sounds like it's got an air leak. Does it run rougher at idle than at a steady 2000 rpm? Does it back fire if you hold the revs steady or only when blipping the throttle?
Can you do a balance test? Remove 1 ignition at a time and note how much the revs drop with each cylinder. If one doesn't drop as much as the other it's likely to be related to that cylinder.
USE INSULATION PLIERS.
