Been searching, but didn't find anything specific, so....
....any recommendations on where to stay (only x1 night) on the above route, approx 4-4.5 hrs south of Calais?
Campsite, or decent, well serviced Aire?
Much appreciated!

I expect lots of us have passed that way but the only time I've overnighted en route was on an unexciting Brit-owned site in winter. Are you avoiding tolls? If so, a (Google) search on "camping evreux" will surely find something in the right area. Try "camping alencon" if you're planning to pay the tolls.

You could try an Aire on the way. There is one near Le Mans - I haven't used this particular one so can't comment much more in it.

Autoroutes via Rouen is a good option. We have been that way the last 4 years and stopped at the Municipal site in Beaumont sur sarthe which is well recommended. It's just North of Le Mans about 4.5 hrs from Calais.

If you want to stay somewhere for free there's an Aire at La Suze sur Sarthe
http://www.francethisway.com/places/a/l ... sarthe.php just behind the supermarket in the Mairie car park. It has toilets and just round the corner there's a cracking boulangerie/pattiserie and a bar/bistro.
However this ...

PS Watch out for the mad French-Canadian woman .... we were the first English people she'd seen since moving there in 1948 and OH BOY did she want to practice her long-forgotten English on us !

we stayed at a nice camp site about 30 mins south of St Malo a month ago. Camping La Hallerais, Taden. The nearest town was Dinan which was very pretty, the camp site was nice grass pitches, not a lot else but it was only 1km walk down the river to the town. The town was in 2 parts, lower and higher....that was the main bit but was a bit of a blooming slope to get up to it! Also stayed at a lovely situation site (tho basic loos etc) over the bridge at La Rochelle.

I remember a very pleasant stay 12+ years ago on our first ever campervanning trip to France - it was "over the bridge" too, on the municipal site on Rue des Remparts at St Martin de Re.
