The Rear wheel bearing on my 88 T25 is playing up again. 2 years ago it was noisy so tightened up the castle nut and replaced split pin and it seemed O.K. On the way through France it became really noisy so had it replaced by a VW garage in France who charged me about 250 Euro's for the privilage. It has done less than 5,00 miles since then and it is as noisy as it was before it was replaced. How do i know if it just needs tightening up or replacing? Don't want to tighten it up and then have to have it replaced again if stuck when abroad.

250 euros That seems like a lot of money to be paying to change a rear bearing.Its possible the garage used the cheap chinese "chocolate" ones.These are known to not last very long.

buy a proper bearing from Brickwerks

Rear bearings aren't tapers like the front, get good quality ones and make sure castle nut is tight as in 6' bar with you stood on it.

Castle nuts on rear wheels 46mm torque= 500 NM/360ftlb

Ah but we dont know the errr weight of the op. we need this to calculate the numberr of extra personages required to stand ..

Thanks for the advice, anyone got a guide to changing the rear wheel bearings. I can get hold of a 46mm socket and a scaffold bar, so apart from the bearing kit, what else will I need and what problems am I likely to encounter?

I will do it for you for the equivalent of 200 euros I use one of these and a FBH to remove mine.Does the job easily..

I'll be doing my nearside rear bearing on Monday or Tuesday next week. If I took some photos while I was doing it would they be useful for the Wiki?

No worries, but it may take me until closer to midweek to do the job after seeing the "pooh" they've given me at work next week One thing I can guarantee though, is that it'll be done by Friday coz that's the last day I qualify for the free retest

Some photo's would be a great help, I have read the wiki advice as advised and I think I get it! I had a little play yesterday and fell at the 1st hurdle. I couldn't get the castle nut undone. The van was on an axle stand and it just didn't seem stable enough to stand on the scaffold pole I had over the bar attached to my (mates) 46mm socket which is too wide to fit through the centre of the ford Granada wheels I've got on it. If I do get it off how will I know if the bearings are knackered or if the 12-6 movement I can feel on the wheel is down to the bearing carrier being worn?

Ah, you will need to make sure that the van is on the ground, with the handbrake on, and preferably scotched, before you even attempt to undo that castle nut dude!! It will be on proper tight, and then some. if you attempt it with the van up on axle stands, I predict it'll be off the axle stands quite quickly, such is the leverage you need to apply to get that nut undone

I needed to take the wheel off to get the split pin out, then put it back on again and drop the van to attempt that castle nut. Which was when I realised that I didn't have a socket big enough - that socket (46mm) will be with me tomorrow (Monday) morning. In the meantime I'm hunting down a length of scaffolding pole
