My 1987 2.1 Wasserboxer Syncro has recently started jumping out of gear. This only happens in 4th, when proceeding gently and going on and off the power at lowish speeds. It never happens under heavy load on the motorway (for example).

Has anyone any idea if this is likely to be a gearbox internals problem or whether it could be something wrong with the linkage (wishful thinking I suspect...)

Mine does it too but a bungee is enough to hold it in.
Postponing the inevitable I know but it has postponed it for two years now.
Have been working on a hidden solution with a powerfull magnet...
Discovered that the origins of the fault was because 4th hadnt been engaging fully after a petrol to diesel engine conversion. The diesel armour prevented the selector rod from fully pulling 4th to where it should be.
I presume that syncro petrol and diesels have slightly different selector rods. Is this true?

Seriously, 2 years with a bungy!! better to cure the problem than bodge a plaster on it...

IIRC yes TD and petrol "hockysticks" are different..

well i blew the budget on the camper, so the doka has had to put up with the plaster aproach till the business starts working properly.
its mainly used in cornish lanes and it does have a normally aspirated 1.9 diesel so 4th gear only really comes into play on the short trips up the bypass where a quick grab of a bungee to hook it in 4th for 10 miles isnt too bad a drag.
as soon as i have the funds though and dont need the truck for a bit i am definately shipping if off to aiden if he will take it.

check the linkage especially the boot on the cup and ball and the condition of cup and ball and rear bush and maybe check the oil if not previously done, once they start doing it it gets progressively worse and holding it in wears other expensive parts, 3rd 4th selector forks are nla from Germany, I have to find a source of them or we'll be stuffed soon or be into remanufactured ones which will be eye wateringly expensive, they were expensive enough as it is, but are a commonly worn part usually in conjunction with 3rd 4th synchro hub failure

I'm sure we can come up with something reasonably priced, if Classic don't pick up the gauntlet

It looks like the gearbox is on it's way out. A full rebuild courtesy of Aiden or (??) would be a great solution if I had lots of funds sloshing about but I dont so will have to look for a cheaper solution (maybe even a bungy...)

Surely a secondhand gearbox from Synrco Nutz or Syncro Spares would be a reasonable solution?

Dream on - I went through this line of thinking last year with my Syncro (AHF box on an AAZ) and if you can find a good,cheap preloved box then I bet its right next to a pile of rocking horse pooh, covered in hen's teeth and with an honest politician ofering to help you put it in...

Keep Calm and Carry on - but save up for a rebuild.

You might get lucky if the box is known.....

But remember, continue to drive it and the wear thats taking place will start to eat more parts, it will only get more expensive when you do get it rebiult.. or even worse it might let go altogether...

means you've driven it, or someone you know can confirm it's in better nick than yours

Sorry mate, just telling it like it is, Syncro gearboxes are mostly at least 20 years old, 100,000+ miles on the clock, full of nasty oil that hasnt been changed, there aint many good 2nd hand ones around and they are not cheap. And you did ask in the 1st place....

If you like we'll tell you that it will be fine, you can just dump some slick50 in the box, hold the stick to force it into gear and it will last for ever...
