Whilst changing the gearbox oil on my 1990 5 speed 1.6td this mess welcomed me on the drain plug magnet...feck  There are three large pieces (All from the same component) and then the usual small christmas tree stuff. The van drives ok through the gears, though a little stiff when cold( hence the oil change)....The question is this don't look good as we're going to France in August :? any advice please.

Looks like the detent spring casing, for the shift forks, 2, 1 on each end, so now one of the shift fork rods is not being supported so well, the fork will rub against the gear/shift ring and wear faster.. prob not a major issue untill it gets more worn and sloppy, then you'll need a new/good used shift fork..

I think thats what happens.. Aidan will be along to correct me I'm sure... :ok

Thanks for the advice guys, Aidans pm'd me saying that it is the selector rod bearing, which although not terminal will need doing sometime. Now trying to decide whether we can afford to fix it now before going to France or wait till later when we have more cash  .Mmmmmmm
