clutch confusion

Right - evening folks.
I have an G reg van originally 1.9 dg. Now 2.1 DJ with a recon engine of inderterminate origin!!
Now - the clutch biting point is very high. Sometimes I feel it is slipping.
I have tried the put it in 4th, handbrake on, raise clutch. it made an horrendous rattling so I stopped doing that!! haha
So, i am thinking time for a new clutch....so off to Brickwerks I go. Now, I thought there were two clutches....the 228mm and another one. Apparenlty there is a third - for 2.1s after 1989. I vin number is given, which is no good as it is a transplanted engine!! (is this right - or as the van is 1990 I need the later clutch??!! even though originally a 1.9???)
So, what is the difference. And how do I know which one I need? I was given this clutch as a little used second hand part (van written off so owner stripped off all the new 2.1 ancillaries he had just fitted....) but the biting point has always been high...so perhaps I put the wrong one in?
Any ideas? Clues? Answers?
Thanks in advance,
Em
