Does any one know what size alan key bit i need for the Drive Shaft Bolts?

6mm allen, or 12 point XZN (like torx, but 12 points), could be either, could be a mixture on the same van!

Use 1/2 or 3/8 drive sockets, you'll never do the outer end of the drive shaft with an allen key.

You also need a 6 inch extension (for reaching the bolts on the outer end of the driveshaft).

A couple of spare bolts and nuts to fit make it a lot easier getting everything back together.


A pit of a lift is a godsend, don't jack the van up if you can avoid it, makes the job harder not easier.

I found a mixture on my van. A bit shocked the first time I looked and saw two missing and three hanging out!

Now I check 'em every few weeks or before a big trip and I've got a couple of spares in my toolkit.

Give the area a good clean before starting esp if you can inside the trailing arm. I found debris falling into fresh grease while trying to fit give the bolt heads a good clean before you start wd40 and toothbrush so you can see exactly which bit to use, if you use the wrong one it will damage the head and turn a pig of a job into a nightmare, esp on the outers. I would change all the bolts for new regardless. if poss with the 12 point VW ones not the shiny cak you can get. There are also small washers on each bolt and spreader plates going between every 2 bolts. re use the spreaders but replace the washers.

I don't think anyone likes doing driveshafts. Its one of those jobs that can go fairly easily or become a nightmare and take a whole day - or more. Does pay to have a spare one with new grease in CV joints, packed in heavy duty polythene in case you have to do an emergency repair in the future. Saves so much grief when its all there ready to swap.

Were they a standard item for the life of the T25 Covkid, or were there differences between early and late vans do you know?

Not seen any differences since the early Aircooled ones to be honest, Seen some differences in the ease with which the CV joints slide on though.

Thanks Covkid. I've got one of the early diesels, so I reckon I should be okay with any of them then. I'll invest in a "persuader" bar at the same time
