Hi
am new to the forum campers etc, I have just acquired an 81 T25 and from time to time lose the ignition lights when I turn the ignition on, I know its the switch but can some-one tell me please, if I need to replace just the cylinder or the whole ignition lock assembly to resolve the issue?

Thanks
Arby

I have a similar problem.
Driving along I can loose my feed to Headlights, Wipers, Fan etc. Engine doesnt cut out.
On mine if I wedge some card behind the switch part (right at the bottom) it solves the problem.
I've been driving like this for 12months
I do have a new switch, just havent got around to it.

I assume I 'just' need to replace the plastic electrical connector, to resolve the issue? I say 'just' as I have read how to dismantle the steering column and guess I need to allocate a couple of hours for this job!

The ignition switch is held to the underside of the ignition barrel/housing by just one small screw...trouble is getting to that screw.
About a 30 minute job but 50 minutes the first time.
No big shakes, do a search it's been written up many times.

Just come back from the MOT, just needs front shocks, oh and the short advisory list, which includes a dodgy upper steering column bearing, are they expensive, as my searches have found lower bearings only upto now and is it easy to replace considering I need to change the ignition switch anyway?

Upper bearing is part of the steering lock/ignition switch housing, sounds like someone has been in there before perhaps - maybe worth tracking down a good used one from the breakers and changing the switch for good measure when you swap the whole thing over - there's a plastic spacer in there, can be left out and cause wobbliness, take a look at exploded parts diagram on VAGCAT or ETKA/ETOS if you have those makes it a bit easier to understand
