either i am going crazy or i have two broken ignition starters

when the key is in it is supposed to send 12v down pin 6, yea? are these prone to failure.... i think so. i am trying to accomplish a 12v relay by use of the 'key in' not turned in any way to power the stereo without all of the other accessories on or key turned if you will.. i am following this guide here- http://www.vanagonauts.com/Radio-Power- ... uit222.htm



i have taken them apart and tried livening up the springs inside, bending the contacts inside to a more firmer and 'better' position to achieve the key in part working with no avail.... oh, when they are broken the seem to send 12v down pin six regardless..

im considering buying a new one from jk 9 just spent £400 with baxter today for other stuff so i think one little purchase from jk is fair.... if its my solution!

anyone done this successfully?

Stop reading Yanky tat, there vans are wired differently, most europeans at that time could be trusted to notice they had the key in the hole, we had the parking light function instead.

You reckon the 6th pin is for something else. This photo is from my van's ignition. notice it only has 5.



That photo in my inital post with my fantastic paint shop efforts is a stock photo of JK’s ignition switch replacement part - J10171 it has 6 pins. hmmm maybe I am on to something here? Although I bet JK has the wrong image and there actual uk replacement has 5 pins like mine.

If you look under the key barrel with the ignition switch removed you can see the protruding shaft in red below.



This is depressed as soon as the key or any object that fits is inserted to the key hole. This action links two contacts within the switch returning 12v’s from the constant as soon as the key is inserted. So yea. wired differently or not. it should be possible

I bought a new switch from Brickwerks about a year ago (its still in the van)
It has 6 pins. there is a
I've just put a meter on it.
The pin at 6 O'clock is connected to the one marked Constant 12V when you depress the centre of the switch.
The pin you have marked key in? seems to be connected to the one marked Constant 12V.

I cant rotate the switch at the moment.

Ok, Just fitted the switch to a spare barrel,
I can rotate the switch now.

The terminal labled Key in? is connected to the centre terminal with the ignition off. In all other positions the connecion is open. ie not connected.

Hmmmm..... So with the key in its live, with key out its not live. And with the key in and turned to "engine running" its off. Correct?

I actually just realized that the image with my "key in" label is on both switches I have, and the only difference between both of mine and yours is this pin in image below.


So possible that, THAT is the pin that's live with the key in and also live with it turned to the on position.


IMO the only remaining pin that could be live with key in would be ;

Sorry I may have confused te issue.

The pin at 6 O'"cock" is connected to the centre pin as soon as you get the key even part way in. It remains connected what ever the position of the key.

The pin at 7 O'clock is connected to the centre pin with no key in, and with the key in, untill you turn the key even slightly.

The pin at 12 O'clock is the feed to the starter, only connected when the key is turned all the way.

The pin at 5 O'clock is connected when the key is turned to the "run" position, but disconnected when turned to starter motor on.

The pin at 2 O'clock is connected when the key is turned to "run" position and starter motor on.

Thats MY new switch (Brickwerks) and an old one. Other switches may be different.

Thanks tony for confirming this. This now means that I could obtain a 6 pinned switch. Connect a wire to the 6oclock pin as shown in the pic. Run that to a relay, which will switch 12v to the acc of my stereo when the key is inserted.

In short, key in means radio on! Hazzar!

Kudos.. once done I will write a step by step here which could be added to the stereo section of the wiki if its of any interest to anyone.

Unless you have a leisure batt in which case its more sensible to run stereo from that.
