Overfill spill questions

To cut a long story short I overfilled my van last week (broken alternator, gauges not showing right level..). The fuel level must have been most of the way up the filler neck, is it normal in such circumstances for the excess fuel to pour out of somewhere onto the floor (ive filled it to the click without noticing problems before now)?
The tank is new, as are all the grommits, seals and hoses. Everything appears connected fine and I cannot now see obvious problems. The only thing I remember from fitting it was that the hoses that go over the long pipes on the tank and connect to the plastic pipes (that in turn connect to the breather tanks) went on quite easily. I don't think I was able to clamp them down due to them being impossible to get to, but they don't seem to be going anywhere now.
On a slightly separate note. Does anyone know the internal diameter of this bit of hose, as its the only fuel hose in the entire van that I haven't replaced:
