Temp and fuel gauge not working on 83 wbx dg engine

Hello fellow Dubbers!
I have a 1983 VW T25 Camper. It is February 1983 with a DG (water cooled) engine. I believe that the model I have, it is a cross over between the air cooled and the water cooled. The temperature gauge has stopped working. The fuel gauge has also stopped working at the same time. I noticed the temp gauge rising and stopped and at this time I noticed the fuel gauge level dropped also. After some checking to ensure that it was indeed not a cooling issue it rectified itself. Shortly after, I lost both the fuel and temperature gauges, not functioning at all.
There is no movement on either gauge.
I believe that both gauges are stopped by the one issue.
I have seen there is a small 'circuit board'/'Diode' attached to this blue foil. I was told byseveral people and reading up on the forum that this could the issue?
Is this a common problem?
I have ordered the diode but is it an easy fix? What do I have to look out for?
Appreciate any replies, since we do want to start our Europ Tour in 2 weeks!!!
