changing 34 pict 4 for 34 pict 3?

Engien is a 1600CT, so the question is can it be done? My 34 PICT 4 is knackered, and I need to fit something. I have managed to put a 34 PICT 3 on (back to front so the accelerator linkage is on the correct side) but it runs for a bit then floods. Is the fuel pump too strong hence the fuel return pipe?
Anyone done this before?
