Started van this morning, ran for a couple of minutes then splut splut splut. Barely ticks over, engine shaking like mad. Smoke coming out of air outlet(from manifold) and lack of power when revved. Did a good long journey at weekend, ran llike a stallion. Nothing obvious to see. Slightly worried. Any views welcome

SURPRISE, I sprayed some easy start down the air inlet and she started without the sluttering and shaking. Not only started but is running sweet. Now I'm really baffled. Taking her for a run. Will let you know.

I had exactly that with a brand new 3 tonne dumper I hired recently. Ran OK for a bit, then clouds of filthy dark grey smoke, no revs, no power. I assume it was just water or carp in the fuel. It cured itself then ran OK for two days solid. It wasn't mine so I don't care. Try the drain valve on the bottom of the fuel filter and see what comes out.

Also try fitting a non return valve (I know I always say this) between the filter and pump it cured all my starting problems.

I'm guessing that is a photoshoped image, BumbleBee! It a take off of the proper Workshop manual, which costs £££ but is very good!

checked the filter outlet and there was nothing out of the ordinary. tell me, is the fuel supposed to leak out when caps unscrewed? It didn't at the time. Still running well.
