I wish it were as easy as you describe
but absorption fridges draw big amps.. because they have to heat the refrigerant....and then the inverter would take it's cut as well.
A battery would last about an hour..if even that long

the 12v side of the fridge needs constant power from an alternator.
that's why the gas option is there when constant electrical power isn't

Forgive me, I'm confused, you say 'you don't want to use gas' I'm intrigued to know, why not? and then you say 'On return to our camp site we would connect up to our umbililcal power supply, which would recharge our batteries' I'm wondering why you can't just leave the 'hookup' (if that is what you are refering to?) connected whilst on your walk?

Gas really is the best option in the absence of mains supply.....the fridge uses a small amount of gas (the gas flame is tiny) so your gas bottle should still last weeks even powering the fridge.

As Kev points out, a battery/invertor setup to power the fridge is not a good idea.

We use nothing other than gas. Our fridge is always ice cold and it costs pennies to run. Infact if we do use a campsite we never use hook up anyway. I can't really see the point as a campervan in my eyes is meant to be self contained.

Do you have safety concerns with using gas?

inverters are no good for heating things.... at all.
By all means try your theory, then you can tell us how long the battery lasted.

Sure I read somewhere you shouldn't leave inverters unattended?

Basically if you don't want to use the gas that you are currently using the answer is don't use the fridge then! Why on earth would you want to convert 12v to 230v to run the fridge? It's designed to be used on gas.

It looks like I won't find the answer here. As the reverand Kev says, I'll get over it. As you have already seen, my first attempt at this forum lark has been a bit of a disaster. I have at least learnt to consider my reply before posting. Sorry for the rather schoolboyish reply earlier. Stll, onwards etc. Cheers for the contributions, Digby, out.

Maybe your description of the problem was not clear, as there were some ambiguous comments.
..like you use the umbilical power supply.. but disconnect it for walks... and reconnect it to charge up the batteries, we don't understand that but you refused to answer the query.
you don't have to do this as the mains power would run the fridge without the need of batteries... as long as the fridge has the ability to use mains power

OK....I think my reply might have been a little direct, even blunt but I hope not rude.
When answering I find myself trying to 'read between the lines' trying to understand the reason for the question in the first place. Often I find the question has been written because the poster has been miss-informed or doesn't quite understand the function (safety or otherwise) of the part they are asking about.
Let me read between the lines here.....
You think the fridge is somehow unsafe when left on gas and or mains?
So when I asked the question 'WHY' ? I was just trying to probe the reasoning behind the question in the first place.

Please don't let your first foray into club 80-90 be the last...we really are a very helpful and knowledgable bunch of enthusiasts..honest!
