1.9dg worn vale guides??

Hi all anybody had any probs with worn valve gudes? recently done a light rebuild on wha im 99.9% certain is a 80k mile 1.9dg motor to g in my van before i sell it. Head studs where all like new which was a huge bonus! anyway after using the van it pulls great and is runnng well however if left overnight smokes heavily on startup for approx 5mins then clears and runs faultless all day. i pulled the inlet maifold off tonight and found both inlets on one side have pools of oil in there and i suspect it to be valve guides. There is no crud in the crank case beather, carb or inlet manifold so its not breathing heavily. compession test show all cylinders even and above 8 and a half bar. Just wondered if anbody has had this before? pretty sure its not scraper rings as it clears out an runs fin after a short drive

Has anybody else had this problem? I ask as it's a first for me to find a water boxer this smokey on start up!

80k is not much for these unless neglected or flogged.
I had a 1.9 DG with heavy smoking (blue) on start and downhill, foot off throttle, vast clouds!!
Replaced cylinders and pistons with set from GSF, Brazilian. (made, not me), the old cylinders looked fine with no broken rings but apparently the oil ring must have passed their usedby. I would be tempted to try new rings which can be had from about £30/ set. Gaskets are expensive and be sure to use proper sealant on the rubber (head) gasket, head to waterjacket.
This fixed my smoke and oil use problem, from memory mine showed oil in intake too.
Normally valve guides would be suspect but this seems less likely in a horizontal engine.
The smoking downhill may give a clue as its more than worn guides would allow IMO.

new rings??
where did you put the gaps? 120 degree apart and 2 uppermost (oil control & lower compression ring)

oil will seep through the gaps..
Did you deglaze the barrels before new rings went in?

The valve guides dont sit in loads of oil and are at a very very shallow angle oil wont run down them standing over night..

what oil? 15w40 is as thin as it wants really...

I used 10 40. After strip down of heads 1.35mm of lateral play on inlet valves so ordered new guides and new rings off TES today. Stripped barrells and pistons supprisingly little wear on barrels would have expected more at 80k. rings and scrapers looked to be in good condition. Scrapers free from coke build up however coke build up quite heavy in the ring groves on the pistons so spent several hours cleaning using old rings. Hopeing to have new parts tommorow and have barrels de-glazed and refitted ready for heads returning from engineers early next week all being well
