Ok, so we are using the new(ish) modern small bottles that are powering our gas heater and separately our spare gas hob.

when we bought our camper van it came with a multihob and grill thing but was powered by a large calor gas bottle.

As we don't use it that much can we convert the big one to take the smaller bottles?

yes just use the regulator that you've been using with the smaller bottles for the hob

??? How?
I am talking about the heaters that have a slot for the small butane bottles

Small Butane Bottle:

And the 15 kilo calor gas bottles with the big chunky regulators:

Sorry, "can" then.

I am trying to get rid of a bottle in exchange for can. everything else we use is from cans which are easier to store etc.

So basically the answer is NO!

no a chance ! those Cans work out loads more in the long run!

Oh and those heaters are very dangerous to use in a van defo don't fall asleep with it on!
