Swimming in fuel!

Hi all,

Got back from a 1000mile trip to France and frank (our camper) didn't skip a beat. Happy days.

However, before starting our return journey I filled him to the brim with fuel and
when I was putting the nozzle back I saw a little splash come from underneath.
Peered under the body and saw a waterfall of fuel pouring onto the station's floor!
Everyone ran for cover waiting for some kind of explosion (I felt like I was in die hard or something). But I waited for the pouring to stop, rolled him away from the pool and started him fine. It looked like it was coming from the tank, I checked all the hoses prior to setting off and they were fine.
About an hour into the drive and we still had the strong smell of fuel coming from all around us. Once it had got to about half a tank the smell subsided.

I know the tank is prone to rusting at it's top from water collecting there and I think this is what has happened but I wanted to get a second opinion before I go taking the bugger out!
Is it a standard thing that the tank just overflows like this?

Thanks

Yes it's 'standard' if the tank's rusted through on top or the breather hoses have decayed or the grommets perished and the T pieces have dropped out.

As Ian says, there are a number of potential reasons for this. Have a look here:

Good detailed blog StuM. Thanks for that. Will definitely use it as a guide along with Mr. Haynes.
Jasper's looking good btw!
