Fed up with my 2.0l CU

Its been running a bit iffy for a while now, a month ago it went in for its MOT and they fiddled with the carbs to get it thru emissions
Now Ive had it back, its been backfiring on deceleration which I could just about tolerate (figured it was the leaky exhaust inlet), but today the thing made a very peculiar noise, emitted a puff of black smoke and then sounded horrible for the 40 yards I had to drive it to get off the single lane track.

No oil leaks or anything and not a constant stream of smoke, just a puff.

After 10 mins with no phone signal, I figured I would have to limp it back home, and to be honest, altho I literally crawled home, it sounded back to normal again ?!?!

2 questions really

1/ Whats the suspected issue / prognosis (I know its not much to base it on)

2/ Does anyone know of a mechanic with experience of setting up the carbs and timing on these vans (If I havent killed the unit anyway)

Help !

Oh and given its a bit of a dog, someone close to Yeovil (or mobile) would be an advantage :)

you might want to try one of those "colourtune" gunsons analysers, pop one in the spark plug hole and you can check your mixture with a coolour range, tune it and set it on the carb. either that or a gas analyser up the tail pipe? or tweak the mixture with the engine running until you find the smoothest idle. take it for a run if you think it's running rich back it off some more.
