Help Alternator mount studs/bolts sheared!

just noticed that both the fixing studs have sheared off the only thing that is holding it on is the adjusting bracket

but there is a pipe in the way so drilling them out is goin to be a rpita any tips how i can do this will be gratefully received

Hi Ade
there's only two bolts holding the Alt are you saying both have sheared?
or the mounting plate bolts?
the bolt at the bottom is push in not screw in
the bolt on the arm is screw in to the alt mounting point

hi kev its the 2 that go into the engine casing thru the L shaped bracket under the alternator

so its only held on by the long adjustable bracket

I assume looking at the picture above you are referring to the stud/s that hold the mounting bracket part number 5 to the engine block?

Yes mate the ones marked up 6 and 7 on there both have sheared off

OK
That's the oil filler pipe, it's impossible to remove with the engine in
easiest way to remove the sheared bolts is to drop the engine, and drill out the old bolts
we can drop the engine in a few hours but the drilling might take a while
I can give you a hand with that.

omg thats not what i wanted to hear

will you be in any night this week so i can pop round for a chat about it ive never dropped a watercooled engine only Aircooled

Ok didn't want to drop engine or take water pipe out so did a bit of modifying of the broken bracket there were 2 threaded holes to the right of the bracket so extended the bracket and used the threaded holes

Don't forget to renew the rubber o-ring seal that sits under the plastic breather tower.

nice bodge
for the future it's often easiest to remove sheared studs in alloy by welding on a new head on to the steel remains with the mig, the heat soak from the welding helps clear the bound threads too so once you have made a head you can get the mole grips on they often come out, then just retap the threads to clean, I recently managed to extract some sheared M4 bolts from steel brackets this way and have removed a broken tap this way too successfully
obviously welding in the engine bay have fire extinguisher next to you and take precautions to protect fuel lines from splatter
