Seeing as the plastic hubcaps on the van are no good [over-enthusiastic removal by me ] I'm thinking of putting some chrome hub caps on instead. I've read though that these repro-ones aren't very good quality, i.e the chrome soon goes to pot. So, I suppose I could buy new and have them re-chromed again to bring them up to having a good life span, or are better quality ones available, and if so, where can I buy them please?

Did Transporters have chrome hub caps orignally, or were they fitted to the Caravelle model instead?

I think you could have it as an option when ordering the van. They will fit any standard 14" wheel. I nearly bought a load from VW a few years back I think they are NLA now. At the time they were about £15 + VAT.

You can get stainless steel ones off ebay, if that helps

VW heretage sell "European Climate" hub caps they would last longer than the "Nevada Desert" type.

but you'll pay for the extra chromium

or you could buy bare metal ones and paint them.

I was considering my options regarding wheels and have decided to just paint them and leave it at that. I can just see those caps being nicked!

If you do it would be could if you reported back on the fit and finnish of them. I wonder if they are made by the same company in Korea that makes the Beetle and Bay stainless bumpers which are pretty good or poor Chinese ones.
I've got original VW ones so don't really need them but even they are not fit and forget and expect peeps would like to know of a good alternative.

If you get expensive ones, I'd try to figure out some way of holding them on securely. I kept losing hubcaps off my old Karmann Ghia due to the bumpy roads round here.

Hi i have just bought a set of polished stainless hub caps from mega bug, they have the vw logo on and look good and fit well, i think i paid about £65.00for them.

When I bought my van it had 3 original VW ones which were spotless. I bought a cheap JK one for the fourth wheel and watched it dissolve in less than 6 months...

But since the good ones are hard to find and super pricey I just bought another cheapo one and a can of clear lacquer. I emptied about 6 coats on both sides and over a year later it still looks brand new.

AND the thickness of the lacquer on the lip meant it took a significant effort to prize it off when I painted my wheels a few months later - could be handy if yours are falling off!
