Just got a horrible noise the last 2 days thought it was the rear drum but no springs broken or out of place checked the bearings for play and both rear wheels have loads replaced the bearings when I bought the van but remember that one of the carriers was loose on the bearing and low and behold thats where the horrible grinding noise is coming from Dave (crankinwagon) also had the same a month or so ago. Have a spare carrier ready to go but remember talking about this issue and whether we could get them machined and resleeved surely there must be enough carriers out there to justify this and give our engineers something more productive to do than vandalise r&r beds :lol:I know thAt between myself and save we must have at least 4 anyone else?

i am with you on this one paul, i think that clive set the wheel in motion with ian about this very sebject a while ago?

Yep remeber having the same discussion with clive myself, very slow these engineers compared to croatian shipbuilders

Yes Clive did pass me a rear bearing carrier a while back and it's going to get investigated properly when I can give it the time of day. There is a possibility of repairing the housing with an SKF speedi-sleeve but it might be better to start with a badly knackered one so there's not too much at stake, like spoiling an otherwise "good" one.
At the risk of stating the obvious, my gut feeling is that the carrier forgings are stretching and going oval, especially with the hammering that some are getting from very hard springs and dampers (both on and off road) combined with very wide and low profile tyres (guilty on two counts here)
What are any of our friends on the continent doing to address this problem?

Whats wrong with shiming behind the circlip+blue locktight?I havent done this myself but have heard of some mecanics using bearing fit to stop the movement!.

Shimming makes no difference at all and it's a common misconception by garages that aren't familiar with VW Type 2 rear suspensions. There's one ball race that controls endfloat and one roller race that takes the majority of the load and provides compliance for expansion as the hub warms up. The problem is nearly always excessive vertical play but with acceptable horizontal play i.e. the bearings have unequal radial clearance, so the carrier isn't round and pushes the outer races out of round when they are fitted, giving excesssive play at 12/6 o'clock.
Then your mot man gives you an advisory or even a fail, even when there's really nothing much wrong

Well shimming would make differance if its the outer part of the ball race thats moving,as it does when the bearing housing is out of round.

Bearing fit won't stop the outer race being influenced into a non-circular form by the distorted housing, however it is applied. I can't see how shimming can be of any use in this case.

Whatever they did to mine has held up well so far; but i got hold of another new carrier at SPD25 just in case. I have been tempted to take the existing one apart to see what they did to it; but that could possibly render it useless.

Syncro ones are always fooked, 2WD don't suffer like syncro do.
The inner bearings come out all blackened where they have been spinning in the housings.
I use bearing fit when needed with no problems.
It's either that, dig deep, or wait to find good second hand ones.

Syncrospares were selling good hubs, cleaned up and painted with a new baring fitted for £40 a couple of years ago at Vanfest. I had to fit mine at the show because mine went on the way up and I had to be brought in on a flatbed, but it's still on and going great still. Are they really worth refurbing?
