I have a 1983 D 1.6NA Van Van VIN Number indicates that it was manufactured between 30-06-82/31-07-82 I can not identify the gearbox as I can not read the code due to corrosion and a poor stamp. according to Brick-yard it could be a 2D,DM or DS. It jumps out of 4th when put under load and I have been informed that it could be the 4th speed syncro that has worn, all other gears are fine. I have the chance to get another box but its a DM with a leaking spigot seal but I will have to move quickly as they do not come up for sale very often down this end of the country. my question is will the DM box fit? the box I have at the moment has 5 webs and the DM has 3, I know this is an early box and the final drive is different but both are from Diesels with hydraulic clutch operation. Also the spigot seal leaks because the spigot bearing failed in the owners van and while it was out he changed it with a 5 speed. he said the input shaft has a slight wear line on it due to this problem is it possible to transplant my bell housing with a new seal and if required swop the input shaft as well. hope someone can help.

as long as the gearselector is in the same place it will fit.

just put your bell housing on to sort the leak.


gear ratios may be different but it will keep you on the road.

the early diesel boxes had webs that were low, and close to the box case , later and 2.0 petrol dk boxes had deep ribs and 5 off, its poss your box has already been replaced for a higher ratio one

standard 1.6 d boxes are designed for 50mph max if you want your engine to last!

I picked up the box this afternoon, apart from the leaking spigot seal the box looks as if its in very good condition, oil is clean and only very fine debris on the mag plug, no big bits of bearing. fingers crossed the gear ratios are not too different from the box I have fitted at the moment, I'm going to fit the old bell housing with a new spigot seal and I will check out the final drive ratios when I have the box open. hope this one stays in gear.

make sure to check that the oil thrower just visible when the inpushaft seal is removed is not moving as this means its out of place and the seal alone cant do the job.
