throttle sticking issues

hello all,

I've a 2.0 ltr Aircooled CU engine and the throttle keeps sticking just slightly when i come to stop at lights and the problem is getting progressively worse. Normally, i can just tap the accelerator pedal and the engine goes to normal idle speed, but now it that doesn't seem to work or if it does it takes a few seconds to kick in.

Does anyone have a possible solution? is there an adjustment screw to slacken off the cable a little?

Any help would be great, thanks!

most likely a new throttle cable and guide needed, not too hard to fit. I have done diesel and water-cooled after the same symptoms I bet Aircooled is about the same job. Check the wiki link at the top of the page for fitting notes.

Also check the dashpot thingy on the left carb - its job is to slow the throttle closing speed, but if it sticks a bit can cause the problem your describing.

Assuming you have the standard carbs that is.

Well i had a bit of a play with the throttle linkage as the issue began when i replaced the small cup inside the throttle linkage on the right side (it was missing). On my throttle cable it is held in place by a spring through the cable hole, next to a lock washer and a nut with the throttle bar in between. i had the nut on the side next to the hole for the spring. When i placed it next to the washer it pushes the throttle bar back to its normal position ... which means problem solved :D

This was after i had dropped oil down the cable as it looked a little dry. (nice tip about removing the offside indicator, thanks for that :pimp )

Basically i must have replaced it the wrong way around when refitting!

No a bad thing to carry a spare throttle cable for piece of mind. Not a fortune and might just get you out of trouble one rainy night....

Tuck it away to one side of the engine bay. I keep a few goodies like that in there :D :D

Again - not a bad idea.

Seeing as you've brought this up - for an air cooled engine what parts would you take for a weeks touring holiday? i 've got one coming up at the end of May and i'm planning to take:

fan belt
fuel line
fuel clips
screw drivers
socket set
petrol can
jump leads
tyre pump
(might buy one of those tyre weld cans just in case you get two punctures!)

What tend to be the things that go wrong that you can fix at the road side?

hi - you would do well to give it a mini service now....ht leads, distributor and arm....drive on the new make sure all is well, and put the old in a box and take with...

At least you KNOW you have a working spare ignition.

Indeed :ok  Fan belt always one of them but Ralph's right: a throttle cable can be a show stopper on a T25! In fact I had a sticky throttle off-road (thick clay) and that as good as was a s-s until copious water and a messy job got throttle returning.
