Driving around the Midlands Safari park last week for 2 hours in our 2l Aircooled, on one of the hottest days of the year so far, made me think i could do with a better way of keeping the engine cool, especially when there is a kn0b holding up the traffic for 20 minutes taking pictures of 3 elephants.

So, has anybody fit one of these or similar. I am thinking a temp sensor, either head or sump and if a fan is stuck on the back of this I can whack it on and keep it under control.

I can't say it has ever concerned me before, am I being over cautious?

Oil change, fuel pipes changed and general fettling done in prep for the Bashtie trip .

another thought i have had was that when i put my Dell's on i wasn't sure how much room i would have under the lid so i stuck 45mm air filters on, i can just about fit the 83mm ones leaving enough space for engine movement.

What air filters have those with Dells got on, any recommendations?

I have a great step by step installation post for you to think about, using a thermostat controlled oil cooler

I don't think you need such a big cooler though

Yes, they where designed for and work well in far hotter climates than ours. Just make sure the cooling system is working as the factory intended then all will be well.

I appreciate that, but 28 years ago there was nowhere near as much traffic on the road, so less traffic jams. They must have understood the need for additional cooling by making them water cooled. I lived in South Africa for 13 years and in temperatures of 30+ my Dads Beetle and Variant were boiling hot but my 1979 passat's watercooling fan was nearly always on in traffic keeping it optimal.

Maybe as a test i should get a CHT sensor or sump sensor and see what's happening rather than going by sound, feel and smell, before forking out a few hundred quid.
I would rather go preventative now than forking out for another rebuild later.
