Iron-on wood veneer -anyone tried it?

While I've got the interior out of the van to do the welding work, etc, I can see that the plastic imitation woodgrain stuff they - Holdsworth - used on the kitchen & wardrobe units has faded and is a bit tired looking.
So, have any of you tried using some real wood iron-on wood veneer straight over the top of the existing surfaces?
Obviously, I will need to throughly de-grease the surfaces and abrade them lightly to take the adhesive backing, but will it last? Any ideas? I will of course need to use the same edging strip stuff to to finish the edges off, but if it would work then I'd have a very nice looking interior for around a hundred quid, which I think would be money well spent and of course way cheaper than a whole new interior.
Any ideas/thoughts?
Cheers,
Doug.
