Front handbrake cable replacement

Can anyone give me some advice on replacing the front handbrake cable please. I've had a good read through some past threads but I can't work out if it is a tank down job or not?
Mr Haynes has it as a simple ... undo this, that and the other and pull it through, but in the real world it's not that simple, I can get it to move about 3 inches either way but it will not withdraw.
thanks in advance.

It probably is REALLY simple when the tank's off which is a BARSTEWARD of a job unless you have twig-like arms and broken fingers.

Couldn't get it out despite best efforts and finally ran out of time

but not before coming up with this as a repair job for the snapped cable
Made out of an old piece of M6 threaded rod and a wood screw insert with the thread ground off used to join the two together!
