I recently acquired a Volkswagen 1970cc, air cooled petrol, campervan. I want to instal an ammeter and volt meter to monitor the batteries etc. Can anyone supply the wiring diagram for this model please? The alternator is 45amp model but I'm not able to get the new ammeter I bought to register and cannot be sure if the alternator is functioning properly or if the wiring may be at fault.

First post should be an introduction...

Ammeter is pretty useless really.. adds extra wires and resistance to an already long circuit.
Voltmeter is an easy fit, just two wires to the battery, and possibly the leisure battery if you have one.
No point connecting to othe places, as a bad earth or poor connection will throw the readings off.
Voltmeter reading should be about 12.4 to 12.8 with engine off, and 13.5 to 14 if charging well.

is it a t25?
haynes manual has all the wiring diagrams you need
If you think an ammeter is used to check alternator functionality then your wrong.
Voltage, is the unit to check alternators, 14.2v is generaly a sign of good health.

The ignition light on yourdashboard would inform you immediatly of any issues of functionality any way

Hi many thanks for the advise, sorry we didn't introduce ourselves first. WE are in Argyll, Scotland, we have a t25 campervan, 1982, air cooled petrol that is a total pain. We are busy trying to get it ready for a holiday, but so far it's testing our endurance. Tony is the creator of all he can repair, I just enjoy the journey...lol. Thought this one was the one for us till it started to go all wrong, but hey that's campervans, I suppose. Thanks again.
