As Rob says, check wheel nuts first, then jack up and check bearing, a little 6-12oclock, none 3-9oclock
I would then check cv's with wheel of ground, also put handbrake on and try .if all else fails then video it to you tube and give us a link, as xtal ball is away on holiday :rofl

CV joints (particularly when drying out) can get into a position when you'll get that clonk. Often it shuts up after giving them a good wriggle but proper answer is to repack them with grease. If its still noisy after that, you prob need new CV joints.

Once they begin to knock, extra lube will help for a bit but not cure it, the knock indicates physical ball and race damage in the CV. So expect to replace the offending joint soon enough. The only way you can buy time with the joints you have is to reverse their torque loading direction by removing the axles and swapping them from side to side (merely reversing inboard-to-outboard one side will not reverse the torque loading; think about it....).

Picked up a complete driveshaft with virtually new CV joints at Stanford Hall VW Thang yesterday for a tenner (should have bought the other on reflection). I find it pays to have a spare ready-built driveshaft and greased joints stashed away. Merc Doctor told me he travels with one under the back seat in a plastic bag on long jaunts! Bane of my life those things. Seem to go through them like a dose of salts no matter what make or how much grease I use. Its such a dull, annoying job too.

Clonk, clonk, clonk....
