Disaster narrowly averted...FIRE!

Hi guys,

We took our new (to us) van for it's first overnighter the other day, to hook it up and see what worked and what didn't etc.. I turned on the heating switch by the back seat, nothing happened so I forgot about it. 5 minutes later there was smoke billowing out from behind the panel. The wiring from the heater control panel to the control box (steuergerat?) was glowing red, very scary! Managed to stop this by unhooking the van and ripping off the rear side panel. Now very nervous about hooking the van up or using any of the old appliances...

Has anyone had any experience of this kind of thing happening before?
What do Ineed to do to make sure the van is safe?

Cheers

its a 1989 westfalia poptop, imported from germany so a lot of the gizmos (electric and gas) are a bit different + labelled in german.

Does the steuergerat control only the heating and therefor okay to remove? or is it more important than that? when we hooked the van up the circuit-breaker kept popping out, wondering if this is due to faulty wiring in the heater circuit.

anyone know anything about this stuff? thanks
