What Engine do I have

I have a non turbo diesel which would have originally been fitted with a 1700cc engine. Its a 1988 van. The engine has probably been changed at some point. The registration document says it is 1600cc but with a KY engine number which I think implies a 1700cc engine. The engine number is unreadable due to being rusty and a bit inaccessible. How can I tell which is fitted?

Look on the side of the crankcase under the left side of the van - there should be a couple of nos. cast into the crankcase - 1.6 or 1.7.

Thanks,
I am not 100% sure where you mean. Is it towards the front or back of the engine?
I will have a look in the morning.

No, it's on the side in the middle.

I think I found the numbers, they say 1.9 and TD underneath. So I assume that it is neither a 1.6 or 1.7. Does the TD mean it should have a turbo fitted?( defineatly hasn't got one) If it hasn't how will it affect the performance. Have I got the correct injection pump? I will have to do some research I think. when I got the van it was very slow and could only reach 55mph and really struggled up hills at about 20mph. When I took it for some mot work the mechanic made some adjustments to the pump and it now goes a lot better..it can reach 70 down hill on the motorway.

You didnt inadvertantly read the 6 upside down as a nine did you... - your performance suggests a 1.6 N/A diesel!

I looked carefully, but there is a possibilty I got it wrong. It had the TD underneath the numbers; would a 1.6 have this. If the pump is wrong, maybe thats why its a bit slow

Do you mean the pump or the TD letters. How can I tell if it is the correct pump?

Thanks Kev, I will have another look at the letters tomorrow morning, But I am sure it says 1.9 TD. It wont do any harm checking again. I will try the other forum to see if anyone can help me identify the pump.

Post a photo of the engine including the pump and the exhaust manifold.
I would guess you have a 1Y engine fitted.
