Clutch, Gearbox or something else?

Over the past week i have found it increasingly difficult to get out of 4th gear. It will go in ok but sometimes will really struggle to come out of 4th inspite of double de clutching then today.................

driving along in 4th at 30mph and noticed a lot of revving but not going anywhere. The gearstick is stuck in 4th to the extent that i cannot get it out at all. The engine will start in this position so there appears to be no connection between the gearbox and the engine. Got towed home by AA ( they got to me in 20 mins!)

The nice AA man said he thought it might be a gearbox failure rather than clutch as the stick was stuck in 4th. In fact he towed me home with the engine running and the stick in 4th.

there is a slight whirring from the engine as if the gearbox has almost but not quite engaged.

any clues?
Cheers
Chris

Under normal circumstances I would have said your clutch was worn out and slipping and the desription idicated clutch drag so partial engagment but not 100% drive. Possible hydraulic failure so the clutch cannot be dis-engaged to take it out of gear.
It is difficult to conclude anything more and your next step would be to remove and examine the clutch first and proceed from there.

could be broken 3rd 4th synchrohub, need to disconnect linkage at box and see if gear selection at box possible/difficult to rule out linkage

Sounds like the intermittent symptoms before our 5 speed box met Aidan's services via a gas station near Brussels and that was a broken synchro hub ... wasn't it Aidan.

Ian.

Thanks for your help guys. i guess it is off to the local garage for a potentially expensive repair then!

Aidan's the only guy to send your gearbox to for recondition, believe me, I've been there ... done that. :ok

Hi Aiden

Thanks for taking my call last week. I disconnected that link at the gearbox end and have tried to move the shaft coming out of the gearbox with my hand but it seems well and truely jammed.

Does that suggest the gearbox is knackered?
Cheers
Chris

yep if you can't engage the gears at the box with linkage off then it would point to an internal fault probably broken synchrohub
